Today, the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity (Houston Equity Fund) endorses Mayor Sylvester Turner. and announced a one-year guaranteed income pilot program in Houston in partnership with Meyers for a Guaranteed Income (MGI). This pilot program will provide $375 per month to 110 program participants in need, totalling $4,500 annually.
Houston Equity Fund will distribute this program’s moderate to monthly stipends to Houston’s most underserved and under-resourced people, with the goal of moving toward a more equitable and prosperous city.
“This pilot could be game-changing for many Houstonians and a small step toward deepening equity in this city,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Many of our neighbors, especially those living in our full-fledged communities, are struggling to meet the basic needs of their families. And there is also a bridge to access the program. It provides quality transportation, childcare, better housing options Builds the ability for families to afford healthier meals. A guaranteed income is an effective tool with proven results that will help combat economic insecurity.
The MGI pilot program will help Houston residents address income inequality, job instability and other barriers to economic and personal progress. This would include people who have experienced homelessness, access to justice, health concerns and other barriers to improving their quality of life. Regular injections of supplemental income distributed to residents can positively impact individuals, families, and communities, whether it is used for access to health care and medicine, healthy food choices, building savings, or supplementing education costs.
Dr. Gena L., Executive Director of the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity. “It is our mission to make strategic progress in four key areas, one of which is economic growth,” Jerkins said.
